I don’t know if any of you are like me, but I have weird sensitive skin. I have no idea what ingredients irritate it, all I know is that when something does, it feels like a swarm of bees are just stinging it. This happens with skincare products, makeup, and even some of my shampoos. What the hell?! I buy (used to buy) expensive, popular brands like: MAC, Urban Decay, Kate Somerville, Elemis, LUSH, and Tarte (which claims to be clean…when they aren’t)- just to name a few. If any of you have purchased Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate, you would know that a small amount of that is $75-$175! That is A LOT to be spending on something that brings me (and many others) nothing but burning and irritated skin. If you do a toxicity check on many (if not all) of the brands sold in Sephora and Ulta, you will see that there are loads AND LOADS of very toxic ingredients in products you are putting on (and in) your mouth, eyes, body, and hair.
Why does this matter? You might just brush it off because it doesn’t irritate your skin, so you’re fine. WRONG! Your skin absorbs chemicals into your bloodstream in SECONDS. Just because your skin doesn’t break out, or you don’t get itchy, means that your body isn’t absorbing these very harmful toxins. Well that’s just true, right? The FDA bans all the toxic chemicals in our products, so these companies would be shut down if this was at all true. Right? WRONG. The US FDA only bans 11 chemicals in cosmetics. Let me repeat that. THE US FDA ONLY BANS 11 CHEMICALS. The EU laws bans 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics that are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm or birth defects (Safe Cosmetics.org). Just take a second to let that sink in. How in the hell does the US only ban 11. Well, this is why Arbonne is so great. Arbonne uses the EU law when formulating their products. So you don’t have to guess and look at the ingredient list to see if something is going to irritate your skin.
Even if you don’t buy Arbonne, these are things to look for in your (and your loved ones) cosmetics, skincare, baby care, and hair care to stay clear of.
- Phthalates, mostly found in deodorant and can be disrupted to the endocrine system (responsible for hormones). Avoid products that have an ingredient listed as “fragrance”.
- The next chemical is Lead. I’m sure you are well aware that Lead is bad for you, I mean they are repainting houses built in the 70’s because of lead paint. So, why is it your lipsticks and whitening toothpaste (and more)? This will be found under the name of “color additives”. Why it’s bad? Lead is “linked to miscarriage, reduced fertility, and delays in the onset of puberty for females”.
- Butylated compounds (bht, bha) found in a long list of products (including chips and butter), but also skincare products like: moisturizers, skin cleansers, eye shadows, perfumes, and DIAPER CREAMS. This is linked to onsets of skin allergies; organ, developmental, and reproductive toxicity. EU law bans these ingredients, but US FDA doesn’t.
- Parabens (also not as commonly known as phenoxyethanol ) I am sure you have heard of, and have heard to stay away from. Well, companies KNOW that parabens have a bad rep, so they have started using the new name phenoxyethanol. Both of these have the same very destructive effects. Parabens mimic estrogen and have actually been detected in human breast cancer tissues. As if that isn’t bad enough, they also effect reproduction, the nervous system, and the immune system.
This was just a very, very, VERY small list of some of the horrible chemicals hiding in your makeup and skincare products. Do your research, and do toxicity checks on the products you are using.
Arbonne refuses to use these ingredients, as well as over 1,000 other ones that the US allows consumers to put on their bodies, faces, children, in their mouth, etc. It’s never too late to start caring about what goes on and in your body. And like I said, your skin absorbs these toxic chemicals into your body in mere seconds. At least give it clean and healthy things to absorb. It might actually save your future self.
